SunTrust Banks, Inc. was a bank holding company based in the United States, with SunTrust Bank as its primary subsidiary with assets of US$199 billion as of March 31, 2018. The bank’s most direct corporate progenitor was established in Atlanta in 1891.
SunTrust Bank has 1,400 bank locations and 2,160 ATMs across 11 southern states and Washington, D.C. as of September 2016. The bank’s primary services comprised retail, lending, Visas, and trust and speculation administrations. With around 24,000 employees, the organization provided corporate and venture banking, capital market administrations, contract banking, and the board through its many subsidiaries.
It was asked to pay $1.5 billion in 2013 to evaluate examples of bad home loan lending, adjusting, and abandoning practices, and in 2014 it reached a preliminary $968 million settlement with the US government.
SunTrust Banks announced in February 2019 that it will be acquired by BB&T for $28 billion in an all-stock transaction, making it the sixth-largest loan specialist in the United States and the largest bank acquisition since the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Truist Financial Corporation was formed as a result of the merger of BB&T and SunTrust on December 6, 2019. The two banks continue to operate separately while merging their operational frameworks.
